Frequently Asked Questions

What ground type is best for a dog tie out stake?

There are many types of soil and ground types that allow for a dog tie out stake to be installed. The Double Dog Run is the best tie out stake system to use in most ground types. Here is a breakdown of ground types and how the Double Dog Run will work:

  • Grass rooted soil is the best ground type and highly recommended for all dog tie out stake types. Choosing an area that is not highly saturated by rain or puddles can improve the security of your dog tie out. This is the most solid ground type to install a dog tie out stake.
  • Hard Packed Gravel or Clay can be a challenge for almost all dog tie out stakes with the exception of the Double Dog Run which will be twice as solid as a standard dog tie out in this type of ground.
  • Packed Sand type soils will not work with dog tie out stakes that lack the ability to disburse the force off the ground anchor. The Double Dog Run features a shock-absorbing base plate and topper designed to take most of the force off the ground anchor; in addition to keeping your dogs tangle-free.

NOTE: Sandy ground types are tricky and you should use the rule that it should be solid enough that if you had to use a shove to dig, you would have to put most of your weight or even stand on it to be able to push it into the ground. If the shovel goes in too easily, then that area is not acceptable for a dog tie out stake and the soil under is too loose to secure the ground anchor. Find an area with most solid ground- that is where you put your dog tie out stake.

Should I use a harness or collar with a dog tie out stake?

You can use either a collar or a harness with a dog tie out stake. It is still recommended to use a collar with the Double Dog Run System, especially if you have dogs that like to wrestle. However, over the many years of being in business, customers have reported that harnesses work just fine! The choice of which is best for your dogs is up to you.

Are dog tie out cables included with the Double Dog Run?

As long as the dog tie out cables are the same length and vinyl coated, you can use different gauges (thickness) to support different weight limits. For example: you have a puppy and a large dog on the tie out together, the puppy will have a lower weight gauge cable than the large dog. There is no reason to worry about the difference in the gauge of the tie out cable - this will not interfere with the tangle-free tie out. However, be sure that both cables are the same length i.e. 15ft, 20ft, 30ft. - both should be the same length.

Most customers will rotate the dogs for play-times so that everyone gets a change throughout the day to be on the Double Dog Run.
